History of Yanmar Construction Division

Since it’s inception in 1912, Yanmar’s core business was the production of engines.  In the 1930’s Yanmar switched to the production of diesel engines and since then has been dominant in the small diesel engine market.  Yanmar also began building diesel powered tractors in the late 1930’s and remains one of the world’s largest makers of compact diesel tractors today.

Over 40 years ago, in 1967, Yanmar entered the construction machinery business with the introduction of a Walk Behind Dozer.  There was a growing need in Japan for reliable construction machines that could access restricted, urban construction sites.

Following the hugely successful introduction of the walk behind dozer, Yanmar, seeing the need for more versatile compact construction machinery, introduced the first mini-excavator in 1968.

These mini-excavators proved extremely popular and since then, Yanmar has introduced a number of other “Firsts” to the mini-excavator market:

        • First Swing boom excavator

        • First Rubber tracked excavator

        • First Zero Tail Swing excavator

Since the beginning, Yanmar has been extremely “Environmentally Conscious”, and “Environmental Sustainability” has been part of our Mission Statement.  We continue that tradition in the Construction Equipment Division by designing equipment to get the maximum amount of productive work out of every drop of fuel used.  In this age when all other companies are trying to re-create and re-market themselves as “green”, we at Yanmar are already comfortable with our attitude of sustainability toward the environment.
